Customer Review

After years of indoor cycling on schwinns at multiple gyms, and after trying out the other two Schwinn models offered by Amazon (SR and Pro), I opted for the Evolution in part because the SR felt a little rickety at the local fitness shop, and I figure I'd pay a hundred or so more dollars to get a perfect ride.

Amazon was terrific--it only took three days to get here, and since I have Amazon prime, shipping was free. The only piece of advice I have for folks ordering this or any other model is that you follow--to the letter--ever word of the post-assembly advice.

In my manual the most important text box is on page 5, titled "Prior to first using the Schwinn Evolution bike it is a good idea to follow these initial set up steps." Basically these tell you to soak the brake pads in special lube which is of course not included with the bike. (Schwinn really ought to think about tossing in a sample pack for set-up, because this is so important.)

I bought a silicon spray lube at Lowes. (Note: don't use wipe on teflon lube; it makes matters worse.) The other main part is the setting of the springs. This step requires you to simply adjust the resistance to its tightest possible setting. I left mine there over night, and that made a world of difference.

Because I didn't perform these steps immediately, I had real problems turning the cranks. With the resistance all the way off, I still had difficulty pedaling, and I couldn't even finish a workout. But once I completed these steps, the bike works perfectly. Schwinn should really think about changing the language of that text box from "it is a good idea to follow these initial set up steps" to: You must complete these steps for optimal performance.

Furthermore, while the bike is very well packaged, it included very little information about maintaining the bike. But there is a whole pamphlet on how and why to exercise, which I found useless (though others might like that). Schwinn should really reconsider revising the instructions that ship with the bike.

Great Bike but still has a few flaws - Consumer Reports Junkie - Bartlett, IL
I bought this bike from amazon about a year ago and it has held up really good. But after a year of use I found that there a few things this bike is lacking. 1) The seat is way too hard. It took me (actually my butt) almost a month to get used to the seat. 2) The handle bars. They are positioned so that the only way to use them is if you lean all the way forward with your head down like you were cutting into the wind. Theres no halfway where you can lean forward a little and just use them for a little support. If they fixed these 2 minor issues this bike would be perfect. It rides real smooth and made pretty tough. The price tag is pretty high on this and would not recommend for the casual user. If your really into spinning/biking or just filthy rich this bike is made for you otherwise look for an exercise that has a weighted fly wheel for a cheap version of this.

About Exercise Bikes
Despite the competition from trendy new fitness inventions, exercise bikes continue to be popular options for home exercise. They offer the same aerobic benefits of riding a bicycle at any time, in any weather, without leaving the comfort and safety of home. Exercise bikes don't take up much space, require little or no balance or coordination, and can provide an effective workout for all levels of users, from beginners to serious competitors. While the same could be said for a number of other types of home fitness equipment, the exercise bike is one of the few that allows you to watch television or read a magazine while you work out. For many people, having convenient access to quality exercise equipment is critical to sticking with a long-term exercise program.

This bike is really nice for the price. It was super easy to set up if you read the directions people! It's really quiet and rides smoothly. You don't have much room to pedal while standing. I wouldn't recommend it. The seat made my butt fall asleep so I changed out the seat with my bike seat. Changing the seat made a huge difference and it was really easy to do. I love this bike and would recommend it to anyone!

An individual lemon on what may be a great product. - Gregory Moreno - Larkin Valley CA
I had read an earlier review which loved the stationary bike but didn't like the box it came in -- too flimsy. My beat-up box was just the beginning for me. I believe my Schwinn had previously been returned. It was missing some 10 or 12 bolts in the body of the bike. But, I called the number in the manual and received terrific help from Schwinn (or the Nautilus exercise machine company) in having the right bolts sent to me. I have never had better help from an electronics or computer or any company -- it was like dealing with AAPL. However, near the end of the call I was informed I would need a special tool or a trip to a bike shop to complete the repair. After hanging up I thought it over and decided to return the bike to AMZN. (I called Schwinn back & cancelled the bolts and got out my old Nordic track.)

Returning the bike proved quite easy. I printed a label for UPS from the AMZN web sight and took it to my neighborhood UPS store (they might have actually come back for it -- I didn't get that part). It didn't cost me a penny either way-- my credit card was credited in about 2 weeks for the full amount.

So I can't actually say how good the bike is but I was greatly impressed with the Nautilus, AMZN and UPS companies and the internet purchasing system.

Overall I'm well pleased with bike. Easy to put together. Because of my height, I had to adjust everything out and up as far as it will go. Still yet, if I'm not careful I find my knees have a tendency to brush against the handle bar. I'm 6' 4" and 240 pounds.

Customer Review

Having previously purchased a Bowflex from Nautilus a couple years ago and assembled it myself I was prepared for the daunting task of assembling this item and I must say they didn't let me down! Anyone planning on purchasing this bike and assembling it themselves should first peruse the assembly manual here on Amazon before they order to see what it entails. What it entails is just under 30 pages (there are 56 pages total but half are in English the other half is the same thing in French). What I found helpful both with this bike and the Bowflex was to print out the pages of the instructions that were pertinent and have them handy. First read or at least skim he instructions to see the order of assembly then check to make sure that all the parts are present, assuming they are then gather the necessary tools and just jump in!

Once assembled the machine is a real joy to use. The seat is comfortable and easy to move if more than one person in the house is using it and needs to have a different setting. The exercise console gives excellent feedback and is very motivating to help you go the distance! The basket in the back of it is a nice touch and let's you store stuff you may want to use with the bike like your water bottle.

Like all Nautilus equipment it's sturdy and well built and seems to be well thought out - is it worth more money than other brands - hard to tell it all depends on how much bike you need and how much you are willing to pay for those needs. If you have the money to spend and can get pasted the assembly I think you will like this bike and it's features that are listed in the description here so I won't repeat those.

Great Bike for the Price. - C. Lantz - Los Angeles California
Got this bike about a week ago. It wasn't too hard to assemble and I thought the directions were easy enough to understand. Creating a user and setting up a custom workout is easy as well. The fan on this bike is a complete waste of space. Not worth turning it on. The back seat is also not too comfortable, but it really isn't too bad. Overall a really great bike for the price. A lot of the other bikes I had tried out at Dicks, Sports Authority, or Sears all felt really weak, and the Nautilus feels pretty solid. I love all of you.

Headsup on assembly........ - D. Noson - so cal
My thoughts on the assembly process:
1) The actual manual had 4 (loose) addendum pages and weren't located in the proper page locations. So just review them before assembly, otherwise you'll be scratchin your head trying to figure out the actual figures. My only question is why they just could't print out a complete new manual? It's nothing fancy.
2) The lock down seat adjustment has to be the absolute worst design. The knob requires to many turns...if fact it almost has to come completely out for the seat to slide. Then you have to line the screw up with an adjustment hole..that you can't see??)
3) The Operators manual refers to a "one" speed fan. Well, mine has multiple speeds, but is quite noisy!
All in all, if they just fixed the simple things, this would be an assume bike. Love the variations/options available.

I received the bike on time and in good shape. The assembly was easy and no parts were missing or damaged. I noticed during the assembly that the bike was built like a tank, ie, it is very sturdy. When I tested it, the action was smooth and very quiet. The seat is not the most comfortable, but a small foam pad improved it considerably. Now, the reason why it did not get a 5 star rating from me. Two items should be completely junked and redesigned by someone who understands how to do it right, and always has the customer in mind. First, the user manual: to say it is superficial is the kindest thing I can think of. It really ia a joke, a bad joke. It is completely lacking in any detail about operating the computer that controls everything. I defy anyone to learn how to run the computer from just reading the user manual. Lacking any usable instuctions, I attmpted to program the computer. I have been using computers most of my adult life and am not a neophyte when it comes to programming and operating computers. To say the experience was very frustrating would be an understatement. It is not at all intuitive, and in fact, is counter intuitive in many respects. If you are not prone to cursing, try programming that computer and you will quickly learn the technique. To put something like that out and leave it up to the customer to try and make sense of it is just plain bad business practice. You might get away with it if you have a monoply, but Schwinn does not have a monoply.

Excellent mid-range bike - Robert J. Tidey - Ca, USA
I wanted a mid-range exercise bike that was quiet, solid, reliable but reasonable priced. After a bit of research I decided on the Schwinn 220 and now after 6 weeks of use I am pleased that this has turned out well.

Assembly was very straightforward and took about 90 minutes on my own. Only problem was my own where I didn't look at the instructions carefully and spent too much time trying to screw on one of the pedals until I realised that one had a reverse thread.

Performance has lived up to expectations. I find the seat / position adjusted well and is comfortable. There is no noise during use and it feels very solid. There is a good range of workout options ranging from easy through to challenging.

The display is very clear and easy to use. There are a couple of small improvements which would have been nice. This model only supports one user's settings and history with everybody else being a guest. As my wife uses it as well it would have been better if it supported settings for a number of real users. Then there is a silly bug with the history summary which shows number of workouts, hours of use, miles, calories etc. The hours of use has been calculated thinking that a 30 minute workout is 0.3 of an hour. So 10 30 minute workouts show up as 3 hours rather than 5. No big deal but a bit sloppy.

Overall I am pleased with the choice and use it regularly now.

Good bike for the price - Daron Roberts - Denver, Co
Setup was easy using the assembly manual on Schwinn's website. Only major complaint is you can only setup one user and the rest are Guest users. It would be nice if you could setup 2 or more users. Bike is stable and comfortable.

This is a great bike. My son loves it. Only part on the bike that is a slight negative is that the coaster brake makes noise when you are coasting down a hill or after pedaling fast. I bought it on Amazon for his birthday.
When we took it out of the box, the forks had been crushed during shipping. They were squished together so the ends were only about 2 1/2 inches apart. It took 3 hours of using various spreaders, including a disc brake tool to get them somewhat back to normal. I did not want to return it since it was already his birthday.
In summary:
1. Great Bike.
2. The flimsy box was full of puncture holes and tears
3. The lack of adequate packing/box design allowed a heavier item to compress the forks and 'ruin' the bike.

If you order it for a gift, check it out before the event so there is no 'surprise' when your anxious 8 year old is watching :)

It took us 2 months to get a replacement fork, after numerous emails back and forth, they finally sent us a fork to the wrong address... The last response was "send us first fork back", that's all, no hello, no please, no thank you, no sorry, no bye, no nothing. You can not stretch it out by yourself, it just snaps back right away, it wasn't damaged during shipping, it's impossible, it was bent and twisted at the same time, it's obvious that it was made this way in China, no quality control whatsoever! Our 2+ months vacation is over, we replaced the fork, but wait! the back wheel is not spinning right or doesn't spin at all, please note this is not a malfunction of the brake, there is something wrong with the whole construction, it's way hard to pedal if it spins. We bought it for a special occasion, I am glad we were able to rent another bike for the whole summer. This one has never been used, 10 minutes and failed. Never again Schwinn! Waste of our time, money, etc. I will buy a different brand next time.

you can't tell, but the rear wheel is not a free spinning wheel, it is a brake when you apply reverse pressure.
